Saving a Child Table Record

I’m relatively new to Access, so maybe I’m missing something obvious, but I
don’t understand something I’ve observed. I have several One to Many Forms
that also have sub forms for the child table plus an additional subform based
upon a query that is updated via the “After Update†event. All of them have
the identical behavior in terms of the question I’m going to try and describe
below.

When I enter a new record or edit an old record in the child table’s
datasheet and then click on the blue SAVE icon, the query on the subform does
NOT update. However, if I simply continue with the data entry and go to the
last field on the record and hit the Enter key, which moves the cursor down
to the next line in the data sheet, the “After_Update†query kicks in and the
screen is refreshed with the new total.

That brings me to my question. Why doesn’t simply clicking on the SAVE icon
accomplish the same result as moving through an entire record and then down
to the next line. It appears as if clicking on the SAVE icon does not save
the record or is there something else happening?

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

The blue, save icon is used to save a selected database object. When you
have a form open and select the icon you are saving that form, not the data
in the form. As you have discovered, Access takes care of saving records for
you. If you enter data into only one field in a form, and there are no other
fileds that require data, and close that form you will see that one field in
the table. Even if you leave the cursor in that field in the form the datat
will still be there in the table.
If you are open a form in design view, make a change to the form and close
the form, Access asks if you want to save it. However, if, after making
changes to the form, you select the Save icon and then close the form you are
not asked by Access if you want to save the changes because they are already
saved.

Hi jahoobob:

Thanks for the response.

Do I understand you correctly, clicking on the blue save icon does NOT save
the new and updated data?

Thanks,
Robert
