Saving a document to my desktop using Word 2007

When I save a document to my desktop I click Save As and it changes to
compatibility mode. I change the file type from .docx to .doc and then click
save. It saves to my desktop but it also saves like twenty temp files. why
does this happen? Also when I try to open this document all of my work is
gone its almost as if I opened a new document instead.
