Saving a document

I have OS X 3.2, Office v.X and an iMac. Whenever I try to save a
Word or Excel file the save window opens behind the menu and toolbars
at the top of the screen. The top portion of the save window,
including the field to name the file, is hidden behind the menu and
toolbars. I cannot move or resize the save window. Unfortunately
this means I can't name my file so I accept the default ("untitled" in
Word and "Workbookx" in Excel), save it to my desktop, go to my
desktop to rename the file and move it to it's proper location. This
is driving me crazy! There must be something simple I'm not doing?
My manager, who has a much newer Mac with a much larger monitor,
doesn't have this problem. Any suggestions???

Try messing about with the resolution (temporarily set it to something
extreme) on the monitor to get the Save window into a place where you can
grab the top, then hope it remembers where it was. That has been the
solution for other windows stuck in inconvenient places, though I've not
seen this problem before.

Although I feel like you ought to be able to type a name even without seeing
what you are doing, and in Word the default filename is the first line up to
the first punctuation.

(PS. Can one grab the top of a Save window in Office X? I sure can't in
Office 2004).

Are you talking about the prompt that appears the first time you save a
document or when you select the Save As command? If so, you're right, it
cannot be moved. Rather than being a dialog box, the save prompt in Word is
a sheet. Sheets are physically connected to the windows with which they're
associated, so they can't be moved like a standard dialog window can. More
information about sheets and their benefits can be found here:

In both Excel and Word you can use view > toolbars to control the toolbars.
Maybe if you turned off the toolbars you'd have more real estate at the top
for saving files. They can always be turned back on when you need them.

Thanks, Mickey! And does that apply to Office X as well, or just Office
2004? ( I know it's an OS feature, but assume there's a choice about
integrating it?)

Yes, sheets for the Save function are present in both OS X native versions
of Office.

Right.

I have a simular situation here. OSX.3.5, office X and 2004. When I
am in the 800x600 resolution, I can't see the save button with the
naviagtion window open. I have tried to go to 1024x768, shorten it up
and then go back to the 800x600 and it jumps so I can't see the save
button. This is in a lab with 20 eMacs and several iMacs and they all
do this. I have recreated it with other images also. Any idea's as to
where to start.
