saving and opening doc from website or email

User tries to open a email word document
ac+trabs+setyo+0410033.doc) and gets error msg unable to
open. He has to rename item and then it opens. User is
on XP and document (ac+trabs+setyo+0410033.doc) is
created from word 97. User can go to the website and
open document but when saves it to desktop it does not
open. Is there a setting on in office xp word or other
that should be set?
