Saving as default version

Richard

I have emailed out a version of my project plan and my team has made some
changes. I now want to save that plan back to the server, which essentially
means that I need to load the modified plan and do a Save As to the
published project name. Project Server is objecting to this, however,
saying that I must save the new plan either under a different name or under
a different version. If I save it under a different name, then I'm going to
start seeing a proliferation of projects. I'll also have issues with my
resources seeming to be overbooked. If I save the project as a different
version, then it won't get published to my resources.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

You should ask your Project Server administrator to delete the old version
of the project from the Project Server database. Then you should import the
project into the Project Server database using Tools - Enterprise Options -
Import Project to Enterprise. You SHOULD NOT open the .mpp file, click
File - Save As, and then save it in the database. Hope this helps.

Is the implication here that once a project is published, you must always
make your modifications on the server? Could you make the changes in
another file, and then cut and paste the entire project on top of the
published project (i.e., open both projects and do a cut and paste)?

Thanks.

Yes, the implication is that you should always make your modifications to
the enterprise version of the project, which is the project stored in the
Project Server database. I would not recommend doing copy and paste the way
you recommend, as it has been known to cause file corruption problems. Hope
this helps.

Richard,

You can use the Offline mode to save project plans off the server temporarily. We just tested this for the first time this week and it seemed to work OK - in a completely artificial test. But it's worth a try if you really need to modify plans offline.

It is actually pretty slick. Far more robust than I thought it would be. Once you save the project offline you get a local copy of the plan to work with. When you restart Project Pro and specify Work Offline you still get the same kind of project list as you do when connected to the server except the only plan listed is your offline project. You work on it, save your changes and go merrilly on your way. Once you're in a position to reconnect to the server you do so and open the local copy and there is an option on the File menu to Save Online. Voila! Your local updates are saved to the server. Check it out!
