saving changes to word docs created in previous Word versions

We copied our documents to disk and dropped & dragged them to our office
2003. At times unable to save = get box about file permission error, or that
the document is locked by another user. The documents were originally
created in earlier versions of word - in Windows 95 and Windows 98.

If the documents were copied to a CD, the read only attribute of them will
have been set on. Right click on the file in Windows Explorer and select
the Properties item and uncheck the Read Only box.
