Saving Different Office file versions

I undestand how you can use File-->Verison to save a different version of a
file in the same file.

My question is - I thought I heard of a way to save different versions of
an Office file to a Windows 2003 server's unused disk space automatically

Am I imaginging this or can this be done...?

You can turn versioning on, and you will notice the file getting quite
large. That large file will a lot of drive space somewhere. There is
also "make a backup copy" feature which also will "eat" drive space.
