Saving Documents in Word 97

D

_Daniel Sullivan

Hello~

I recently ran some updates to my Word 97 including SP1 & SP2. Ever since
then, documents have been taking a very long time to save (about 30-45
seconds per document). This happens if the document is large or small. I
wondering if there was anything that would make it take this much longer to
save documents. All I have really done since this problem is occurring is
install the two service packs. Any information / suggestions / experiences
/ hints you could provide would be much appreciated. Thanks.

~Dan

Several things can cause this.

By default, Outlook 97 is configured to automatically "index" all Office
files and eventually causes delays in opening/closing Word. As I recall,
the SR-1 fixed this, but check to make sure the Journal feature is turned
off. Open Outlook and go to Tools/Options. Click the Journal Options
button on the Preferences property sheet, then clear the check box in the
Also Record Files From list box.

BTW, just in case you turned on Allow Fast Saves in Tools/Options/Save, turn
that off -- it doesn't do what the name implies and this feature is known to
corrupt documents.

Find Fast is another feature that indexes Word 97 files. Shut that off in
Control Panel.

Close all applications and do a search for temporary files. The best time
to do this is when you first boot up. Search for *.tmp and delete all you
find. You can Ctrl + A to highlight all of the files and delete right there
in the Find drop-down window.

If none of the above applies, are you on a network? Do you by chance have
both Works and Office loaded on your system?
