Saving Documents in Word Format

I need help. I am running Windows 2000 and Word 2003. When I create a new
document in Word and tell it to save as a word document.......It will save it
but the icon on the file shows up as a Notepad document. If I just double
click on the icon to reopen the document, it opens it with notepad but is in
unicode. I have to right click on the file name (icon) and go to Open
With.....and click on MS Word. Is there a fix that anyone knows of ? I am
positive that I am saving it as a Word Document to begin with.
