Saving documents while connected to network slows down

I am running Windows XP operating system and Office 2003. When I am
connected to the network at home or the network at work, my system
freezes and slows way down whenever I go to save a document. This
doesn't happen when I am not connected to the network, only when I am.
Oh and by the way, it makes no difference where I am saving it to,
whether on the network or on my own system. Does anyone know why this
is happening and what I can do to fix it?

Have you got mapped drives set up in Windows Explorer. If so, delete them
all and test again.

Have you got a locally installed printer driver set as Windows Default?

Are these wired or wireless networks? Is the printer wireless too?
