Saving emails as outlook template

I'm trying to create a template to be sent out as automated reply on receipt
of any emails that come to me on my outlook (2002 version) (NOT an
out-of-office reply)
I write the message and then try to save it as outlook template, as
suggested by microsoft help, but I am not given this option. Help!

Turn off WordMail as your email editor (Tools | Options | Mail Format) first.

There is always an email editor. If you don't use Word, Outlook has one
embedded in it which it will use.
