Saving error - file is currently in use. Try again later.

Since installing Office 2007 when I try to save changes to an existing
document, I now get the error '\\Server\Shared\file name.docx is currently in
use. Try again later.
This happens whether I am trying to save changes to a Word 2003 doc or Word
2007. The files are stored in a shared folder on our server. I have
Windows XP Pro 2002, Service pack 2. All updates are in place. If the same
document is on my desktop instead, I have have no issues saving the changes
on the desktop. Thanks for input.

Well the document on the server should be locked but only to other users.
This suggests that Windows is seeing you as the wrong user and if it works
if you log in as a different user, it suggests that your profile is corrupt.
Profile corruptions can be really difficult to diagnose: delete and recreate
the profile is usually the best solution.

There are 2 "users" on this PC. I logged into the other user and still have
the same problem. After checking, Excel 2007 is also doing the same thing.
We are not having this problem on a different PC with Office 2007 that is
accessing documents on the shared network files. Any other advice would be
helpful. Thanks.

Are you able to login on another workstation as yourself and work correctly?

Our network does not require that each person login with a username and
password to gain access to network. Once the PC is turned on, you choose the
user from the Microsoft standard screen that takes you to your customized
desktop. You then have access to anyhthing on the shared network drive. I
can't go to a different PC in the office and login as myself.

So the shared network drive isn't a server?

I don't know where go from here. It obviously isn't a Word problem or a
document problem because other computers have correct access. I suggest that
you restore the the PC from a backup prior to the problem starting.

we have these errors too--you can open from the mapped drive, but you
cannot save back to it, you can save as to a different name, once. We
tried creating a new user, with no better results--also tried making
the mapped drive a trusted location w/ trusted sub-folders. I have
switched over to Open Office in the meantime, since Office 2007 has
trashed by Office 2000 installation too. Very irritating,

To help us diagnose the problem, is the mapped drive on a Windows server or
where? If it is a Windows 2003 server, is it patched fully up to date? Is
this only happening on one workstation or many?

Good day. I am also having this very same issue. Here are some
details:

Windows Vista Enterprise
Office Enterprise 2007
A network drive is mapped to the fileserver. The fileserver is running
Windows Server 2003 (Standard) SP1.
The server and the workstation are both fully patched.

When trying to save a word or excel file to a network drive (after
opening it from either a copy on the local hard drive, a USB key or
from the network drive itself) an error comes back and says the file
"...is currently in use. Try again later."

One thing to note: This happens when the files are being saved down to
97-2003 versions (the program states "compatibility mode" in the title
bar). When using the new Office 2007 file format I do not get this
error message.

Thanks in advance for any help,

TomL

I can confirm everything TomL says: this is a problem when we are
using compatiblity mode-which we must do until the rest of the office
changes over to Office 2007 from 2000. We are running a test case.

Our "server" which contains the mapped drives is running Windows 2000,
v5 with SP3. However I note that we got the same error saving
directly (no mapped drive involved) to the Saved Documents folder on
another workstation on the network--that one was running XP 5.1 SP2.

I should note that a search for "currently in use. Try again later"
or"network file access denied office 2007" yields many people with the
same or similar problems!

I'm going to try and reproduce this at work tomorrow (I don't have a file
server at home) and will let you know tomorrow if I can reproduce this
(which seems likely as you are both having the problem).

thanks Terry--one more comment: my new Outlook 2007 which imported
Outlook 2000 info is having trouble accessing on of my PST files which
are located on a network drive. Might be related.
Also, if you convert xls to xlsm you can save it no problem. If you
run compatibility checker, find no errors and then save back to xls
for others to use, you get the error again.

on this forum, see link below, someone solved the saving to network
problem by disabling BitDefender virus shield. We are running
BitDefender, too, but have already excluded the mapped drives in
question from scrutiny, still have the problem.

I wish I'd seen that sooner! :)

I have not been able to duplicate the problem, so just haven't got anywhere
with this. But I am pleased that someone has got to the bottom of it.

Thanks.
