Saving Excel files

I'm a new Mac user. I transfered all of my excel and word files from my old PC to my new Mac. Now when I open a file and make changes, sometimes it won't let me replace the old file. The error message says it can't access the file. The only thing I seem to be able to do is save the revised file to my desktop. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Have you repaired permissions after you installed Office? Have you installed
the SP1 update?

Go to Disk Utility in the Utilities folder in Applications. Repair
permissions is an option there.
