saving file weirdness

I have an Excel (Office 2004) file with multiple sheets and no links that I can
find.

Whenever I open it and close it I am asked if I want to save changes even if I
have done nothing. And sometimes recalculations never end and I have to force
quit.

Something is corrupt and I don't know how to fix it. Saving the largest
worksheet as sylk didn't fix it nor did saving in a different Excel format.

thoughts?
