Saving files in Excel or Word

P

Pablo Mosca

I have a small 5 user LAN. All users using XP and Office
2000. Occasionally some of the users will get an error
message when saving an Excel or Word document. It is very
intermitten.

Error Message---
Your changes could not be saved to 'BOOK1.XLS', but were
saved to '4CCA4100'. Close the existing document, then
open the temporary document and save it under a new name.

Any ideas?

When you save a file, excel will save it as a temporary file (8 characters, no
extension). Then if that save is successful, excel will delete the original and
rename this funny named file to the original's name.

You see the results when something interferes with this process.

A couple of things that get pointed at are antivirus software and network
problems (hardware or permissions).

I would think it would be easiest to disable the antivirus software
(temporarily) to see if that helped.

It doesn't sound like a permissions problem--since the users can sometimes save
the workbooks.
