See my post in the word newsgroup. In addition to what I posted there it
seems the people with the problem do a LOT of saving as they learned
their habits back before auto recovery files. I've told them to not
worry as much and set the auto recovery save time to 4 minutes to a
local disk.

Which word group are you referring to? People here that have the problem do
a lot of work in word with a lot of document editing. They need to save
their changes.

Here's the current state of what's known about the Save to Server problems:
http://word.mvps.org/MacWordNew/Can'tSaveToServer.htm
(hit refresh a few times in Safari, or use a different browser)

It is a pain--the fixes on that page have worked for some people but not
all. Good luck.

You'll find additional discussion in the MacWord-specific newsgroup--so far
as I know, no more recent fixes have been identified, but I don't pay that
much attention to those threads:

We're in microsoft.public.mac.office. Most of the discussion is in
microsoft.public.mac.word.

MacFixIt posted new possible solutions on their site a couple of days
ago:
http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20060103081958366
We previously reported on a number of solutions to this issue, including
using the "Open" command from within Word rather than double-clicking
items in the Finder, and deletion of specific .plist files (including
the com.microsoft.Word.prefs.plist file, located in
~/Library/Microsoft/).

Two additional solutions have now been identified:

1. If you are using a home directory on an AFP (Apple filesharing
protocol) server, create a folder called ".TemporaryItems" at the root
level of the server volume (hard drive). After creating this folder
(which will be invisible), make it globally readable and writable. Do
this by launching the Terminal (located in Applications/Utilities) on
the server, and typing the following command: ? sudo chmod 777
/.TemporaryItems

2. A posting to the MacEnterprise mailing list indicates that some
variants of this problem may be caused by interaction with Norton 10's
Safe Zones feature. If you set the safe zone to only include the /Users
directory, the problem will be alleviated in some cases.

For more information on this problem, see this article and our
Microsoft Office 2004 product page.

MFI access is public for a while then the articles become "subscribers
only" if I quite remember. I haven't checked whether this one is
currently publicly available.

So far in my situation, we've told folks to lay off the save key except
when they mean it. (Many developed a habit way back when of hitting the
save key every few minutes to avoid loosing work if Word crashed.) We've
set the auto-recovery file setting to 4 minutes. No one has seen the
issue since. Note we locate the auto-recovery on a local drive. And
these are all G5s. With networked homes and/or slower computers this
might not work well.
