Saving files

I use Office 2003, with windows XP, and recently changed to a newer PC.
When I save a document in Word it always saves as a 'word pad' document.
As much as I try it will not save in Word, and I didn't have this problem
with my old computer.
Any clues on why is the happening?

In Start | Run (Winkey+R), type in

winword /r

and press enter. Nothing will appear to happen, but Word will reregister
itself in Windows again. If that fails, run Word repair option (under Word's
Help drop down). If that fails, you will need to manually reassociate
through the Control Panel, Internet Options applet.
