I don't understand why Excel doesn't keep track of the folder where I initially open a file, but instead, I have to indicate which folder every time I save that file.Am I missing something?

Have a look in Excel>Preferences>General and see if "Preferred Location for
Saving" is blank. If it is not, Excel will always default to the location
indicated there.

Also: be aware that Excel will not update its "Current Folder" unless you
use File>Open within Excel to open the file. If you double-click the file
from Finder, Excel does not receive the name of the containing folder, so it
does not update its "Current Folder" register.

Hope this helps

When you save, Excel should aways recall where you opened it from.

Are you talking about doing a Save As...? That does have the irritating
problem of not remembering your starting folder.

However, after you've navigated to and saved the new file once, the
folder should be found in the Recent Places list on the dropdown in the
Save As dialog.
