1. I open a spreadsheet in Excel 2000 on a WinXP system.
(all service packs for both MS Office AND Windows have
been installed and up-to-date. This includes SP2 for
WinXP) I just happened to have opened a file on our S:
(shared) drive. (the same thing occurs even if the file
is local.) 2. I then made a change to the spreadsheet
(or not it doesn't seem to matter) 3. Finally, I click
on the SAVE button, saving it in the same location in
which I opened it. (or click FILE/SAVE, your choice)
Then when I look in the folder in which the file was
SAVED and I find a new file there by the same name, but
what looks like a TEMP filename appended.
Here's an example:
I opened a file called:
GW Data.xls
Then after following the steps above I find the file:
GW Data.xls~RF986ee8.TMP
in the same folder. It kind of looks like Excel is
making a backup copy of the original spreadsheet before
overwriting it, but never deletes the backup.
