saving html files with pictures in Word 2000

When I save a document as html that includes pictures in Word 2000, it
creates a subdirectory (*_files), renames the pictures (as image*.jpg), and
includes a filelist.xml file. However, sometimes it will save two copies of
each picture, and sometimes just one.

What determines whether it will save two copies of each picture or just one,
and how can I make it save only one?

Thanks.

Hi Jes,

There are several factors that can result in the multiple pictures being saved. The Save as HTML feature in Word 2000 was targeted
both at 'home user' web folks and for corporate folks who wanted to be able to jump on the internet/intranet 'rush' of the day <g>
yet still be able to reopen a Word produced web page in Word and to still have all of the Word 2000 content back in a .doc file.

If the graphic you inserted was something other than a GIF or JPG (common web browser usable graphic types) Word 2000 will create a
web browser usable version. If you resized the graphic in your Word document after using Insert=>Picture from file Word will likely
save a before and after set of graphics.

You can use the Office 2000 Web Page Authoring add-in from
http://office.microsoft.com/downloads with Word 2000 to save what they termed 'compact HTML' (renamed "Web page-filtered" in Word
2002-2007) for Word 2000 to have simpler (smaller) HTML files.

Bob,

Thanks for your reply. I am using jpeg pictures, but I'm not doing any
resizing
or other editing within Word, so that doesn't solve the mystery. It sometimes
seems that if I resize, then I get only one version, not two.

I'll take a look at the add-in you mentioned.

John

p.s. Yes, I fall into the "home user web folk" that you mention.
