saving mail items in a desktop folder

Outlook 2003, windows xp
I used to drag an outlook email item to a folder on my desktop to save the
email for quick viewing later. Later, I could just tap on the item, and it
would open for me to reread. Now, it's started where when I do this (drag an
email to this folder or anyfolder and then click on it) it opens Word, with
just a bunch of strange char acters. I can't figure out what's wrong.
thanks,
ck

Perhaps you've damaged the association with files with the .msg extension.
Right-click the .msg file, choose Open with, then Choose Program and
specify Outlook.

No, it doesn't seem to be the problem. I went to properties and made sure it
wsa set to open with Outlook. I even chose specifically 'open with' Outlook.
But it doesn't open. When I try to open with Outlook, it acts like it's
working a bit, but then nothing Outlook never opens, nor the messege...
???

Does the same thing happen if you right-click and choose Open?

yes, I tried open. Also open with Outlook. Both just do nothing. Open with
Word, bring up a word doc with strange chrs. I emailed the file to a friends
and on his computer, the file opens right up in Outlook as a messege...
