Saving Messages

Normally, if I want to save a message, I Print > PDF > Save as PDF... .

I noticed that if I want to save it via the usual "Save as... ," I have two
format options: "Entourage e-Mail message" or "SimpleText Document" (I
installed SimpleText 1.6 a long time ago via Developer Tools).

1. When I save it as a SimpleText document, it opens in TextEdit. "Get Info"
indicates that TextEdit is the default, yet even when I change it via "Open
with:" to SimpleText, the document still opens in TextEdit. Any idea why?

2. More generally, is there any way I can change/add to the format options
available when I choose to "Save as... ?" I didn't notice anything in
Entourage prefs that would allow me to do so.

You can't change dialog boxes.

Yes, of course. And that's why I needed to use Developer Tools to get and
install ("build") the version that would work with OS X.

So why is a "new" Entourage (v.12.1.7) offering a "long-ago replaced"
SimpleText (v.1.6) as an option?

Have you tried a "change all" using Get Info. I'm flummoxed over why you
would want to use Simple Text.

I have no clue.

I asked and this is the reply:

We have no control over that--if it's a bug, it's an Apple one.

At this point, I don't. I had installed SimpleText for a particular reason
having to do with misidentified text files from an old drive (not worth
going into the details), but now it really doesn't matter as long as the
files open (they do) and are readable (they are). I am just puzzled why they
are opening in TextEdit when the OS acknowledges that they are indeed
SimpleText files.
I have no clue.

When attempting to save an individual message via "Save as... ," which
format options should I expect Entourage to offer (does it offer anything
beyond "Entourage e-Mail message")?

LOL! (You'll forgive me if I laugh at such a classic vendor response.)

My GUESS is that SimpleText and TextEdit have the same Apple "signature"
(application code) and that Entourage has (mistakenly) attached the name
SimpleText to the document. If that's the case and if you have deleted
SimpleText, however, OS X should show the preferred application for those
documents to be TextEdit, no matter what Entourage says.

It looks like an MS bug to me!

Not sure what you mean. When I "Save as... ," Entourage simply offers me
SimpleText as one of two format choices (the other being Entourage). So, it
doesn't automatically "attach" any name to it. It does, however, save it
either as a SimpleText document or an Entourage e-mail message (and it shows
up as such in the Finder as well as in Get Info), depending on which format
I select.

Bug? In an MS app? Nah...it must be a "feature." ;)

Each document in the file system has type and a default application
associated with it. I'm not sure how that information is stored in OS X, but
apparently Entourage is setting it incorrectly because it only knows about
SimpleText and not about TextEdit.

Sorry, I forgot! ;-)
