saving non-latin characters in custom Office dictionary

How does one save non-latin characters in custom Office dictionary

ie at the moment adding the word Gdańsk gets saved as Gdansk - as the DIC
file is plain text. how does one change this.

I'm using Word 2003, Vista Ultimate SP2

I had no problems saving Gdansk from Word spell check into the custom
dictionary.

Worked here, too (with the accent). This may be a version issue, though; I
know the dics in some earlier Word versions support only ASCII. It's
deceptive, certainly: when I look at the CUSTOM.DIC file, what is shown is
"Gdansk" (without the accent), but as long as it's there, Gdańsk is not
marked as misspelled; if I remove it, it is (but Gdansk, without the accent,
is not, since it's in the main lexicon).

Another anomaly of OE, the accent appeared in the original message (and your
reply) but it got lost in my reply. If I look at the custom.dic file from
Word > Tools > Options, the accent is present. If I open it in Notepad the
accented letter is replaced with some indecipherable character.

That happens all the time in newsgroups -- because different users'
newsreaders are set to different encoding standards. It's an interweb
thing rather than a word processor thing.

Having noticed that the accent disappeared in your reply, I checked my reply
in the Outbox before sending to make sure mine retained it. It did not, so I
restored the accented letter and then set the sending format to UTF-8. I
would guess that the original question was in UTF-8, and if I'd been
replying directly to it, OE would have defaulted to that.

As for the accent in the dictionary, I *don't* see it when going through
Tools | Options (Word 2003)--I just see an ordinary n--so that's another
anomaly.
