saving presentation as html and accessibility issues

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)

I am trying to save my powerpoint presentation in an as "accessible" as possible format. However, I have run into several problems:
1. the titles of the slides no longer show up when saved as html (they are just listed as Slide 1, 2 etc) and
2. my notes also do not show up in the lower frame.
Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong?

Also, has anyone come up with a smart way to tag images, so that a pdf-file created from a Powerpoint presentation has a floating text box with an image description? I was trying to use some type of hyper link to a text-file but gave up when I could not link to a specific line in that file. Simple text descriptions of images cannot be added in the Mac version of Powerpoint by using Format Picture, from what I understand.

Do you actually have slide titles? From PPT's point of view, a title is the text in
one of its title placeholders. If you select and delete all of what appears to be the
title text on a slide, does the text revert to "Click here to .." or does it just go
blank?

As to the notes, has the presentation been extensively edited; have the notes view
placeholders been deleted and replaced? Is the placeholder anything but the second
shape on the notes pages (go to notes page view, click off the page so nothing's
selected, then press TAB twice; does that select the notes text box?)

If accessibility is important, is saving to HTML from a Windows box a possibility?
We have an add-in for Windows PPT that's designed to make more accessible HTML than
PPT will create on its own. See more at http://www.pptools.com/ppt2html/

You might also want to stop by Glenna Shaw's site. She's our PowerPoint Accessibility
Goddess. There's a lot of really good info there. If nothing else, read "The

The text reverts to "Click here....". I also should add that this presentation was originally created on an older version of powerpoint and the title did appear on the HTML when saved from this older version (2004). Under "outline" the titles also appear as bold text, by the way.

This presentation both had original notes that were created in the older version of powerpoint and I modified it and added new notes. Neither shows up. When following the "TAB" instructions above, the notes text box is indeed selected.

I would like to avoid this inconvenience if at all possible, also considering that other problems usually occur when I try to port a powerpoint presentation from Mac to PC. Therefore I was hoping that someone had come up with some smart work-around to provide a text description for every image. I almost got "Screen Tips" to work in this way, but they did not work correctly in the saved files. I think I'm going to end up saving as pdf and going through the files with Acrobat to add text descriptions.

OK, they're real slide titles, then. What happens if you add a couple new slides with
titles and convert to HTML? Do the titles show up for them?

What about an altogether new presentation?

Another fine theory goes down in flames. :)

No, and I also tried to insert new notes, which did not show up either.
What about an altogether new presentation?

I first created a new presentation after closing the old one. Saved HTML did not have titles or notes. Then I quit and re-started Powerpoint and tried again, just to make sure. Same thing.
Surprising that no-one has reported this issue yet? Or is it just me? Sigh.

I don't have 2008 so I've no way of testing this but a couple things you might check:

What browser are you using? PPT's HTML really only works well in Internet Explorer.
It sniffs for other browsers and if it finds you're using something else, gives you a
message about how the pages won't work well in other browsers, do you want to continue?

If you use an alternate browser that's set to "identify itself" as MSIE, the sniffing
code may not work, and neither may the various features of the HTML like slide titles
and notes pages.

Also, when you click Save As Web Page, click the Web Options button before saving. If
Slide Notes is disabled there, you won't see notes pages. Also, if you enable HTML for
non-MSIE browsers, you may not see the browser-sniffer's message but you may also see a
"reduced-feature" version of the web pages.
