Saving projects created off-line

We are using MSProject and Project Server 2003, but I'm having trouble saving
projects created off-line. I started MSProject and selected "My Computer"
and "Work Offline", create a new project, and clicked "File" >> "Save As",
selected my directory, typed the new project name, and clicked "Save" to save
to a file. I get the error message "You are trying to publish a
non-enterprise project to Project Server".

The save is working, but the error message is confusing to new users. If I
turn off the three items at the bottom of the Tools >> Options >> Collaborate
screen I do not get the error, but most users work on-line with Server, and
do not want to change default options for different projects.

How can we save off-line projects to a file without this error message?

Thank you for any assistance.

When you select File then Save As you should receive the Save to
Project Server dialog box. At the bottom, there is a button "Save as
File." Select this button. You will then be asked about whether you
want to save with most Enterprise Global fields or use only what was in
the current session. Make a selection, then it will bring up a regular
Windows Browse dialog so you can save a file. I hope this is on track
with what you had in mind. Good luck.

You are not working correctly with Project Server using the methodology your
are describing. If you create a project and save it as an .mpp file, and
then are ready to bring the project into the Project Server database, you
should use the Import Projects Wizard for this purpose (Tools - Enterprise
Options - Import Project to Enterprise).

Otherwise, I believe the error message you are getting comes from an
incorrect Options setting for the project. Do the following to correct this
problem:

1. Open the project
2. Click Tools - Options
3. Click the Collaborate tab
4. Make sure that NONE of the options are selected in the "On every save,
publish..." section at the bottom of the dialog
5. Click OK
6. If you made changes from step #4 above, save your project

Let us know if this helps.

Did you check the problem projects using the second set of steps I
recommend? If not, please do so, as I believe the Options setting is the
source of the problem for each of the problem projects. Hope this helps.

Dale -
Thank you for your comment. Most projects are maintained in Project Server,
but preliminary work on new projects is usually done off-line. After the
project manager has created a reasonable plan it is imported and maintained
on Server. Most work is done on Server; the error occurs on work that is not
ready to publish.

The problem is a deceptive error message, and operating with some local
projects and some published projects.

Alan

Turning off the Collaborate options does prevent the error.

I was hoping that "Working off-line" would tell Project Server not to try to
publish, but it is just a computer. Maybe the next version will be smarter.

Thank you.

I have connected to Project Server thru Project Professional, but I
can't seem to get to the wizard to import my project into the server.
What am I doing wrong?

What happens when you try to import a project? Please give us more details.
