Saving RTF file increase file size.

I have a RTF file (528 KB in size) created using Word2003. When I open this
file, add a couple words and save the file, the file size becomes over 8MB.
This file contains a couple images, and if I delete these images, the file
size do not increase this much. So Word is doing something with these two
small images.
If I open this RTF file and Save it without changing anything, the file size
do not increase.
If I open this RTF file and use Save AS to save this file, then the file
size increase to over 8MB.
I cut and pasted the entire document to a new document and saved as RTF, and
it still becomes 8MB.

Would someone help me to to figure out how I can keep the RTF file size
about the same as the original RTF file size without deleting these embeded
images. We need to keep these images embeded in the file instead of linking
them

I checked Word settings - Format -> Options -> Save tab, "Always create
backup copy" is unchecked, "Allow fast saves" is unchecked, "Embed TrueType
fonts" is unchecked. Files -> Versions... option is grayed out for RTF file.

I hope someone knows how I can keep the file size small...

Check File/Properties and on the Summary tab make sure "Save Preview
Picture" is not selected. If there are images in a file and the Save Preview
Picture option is enabled it's known to cause file bloat -- especially if
the images are on the first page.

Thank you, Beth for your response.

I confirm that "Save Preview Picture" is not selected - but still the size
increase from 528 Kb to over 8 MB as soon as I hit Save As or modify the file
a little and Save (

I tried with 7 machines in the office and all behaves the same.
Can you think of any thing else?

Thanks for the file. What I noted was the first image is rather large.
It's cropped and you are only seeing a portion of it but image that's stored
in the document is a screen shot of the individual's entire screen. (It
looks like they were listening to KQQL at the time. <grin>) Reducing the
image will take a large chunk of the file size off. You can try using the
Compress Pictures function in Word to remove the portion of the image that's
not visible in the document but the best method is to modify the image in an
image editor.

I can get it down to just under 2 MB when saved in .rtf format and I think
that's about as good as you are going to get. A rich text file that contains
images is going to be larger than when saved as a Word document. If you need
to make the file even smaller then you'd need to use a format other than
..rtf such as PDF.

Thank you very much for checking the file and letting me know what is going
on with the file.
My only question is how the client created the initial RTF file with only
528 KB, when I can not save it as the same size... Do you have the answer?

I really don't know for sure but it could be due to the version of Word they
are using. I tried modifying it and saving it in Word 2002 (since I have
access to it right now) and it ended up a little under 6 MB. They could also
be using another word processing program such as WordPerfect.
