Saving RTF without vector graphics

Is there any way to have MS Word save an RTF file without
converting all the graphics to vector-type graphics
(WMF)?

I need to convert a bunch of docs to RTF format to
transmit them to clients, but some of the file sizes jump
from 1Mb as a .doc to 16-32Mb as a .rtf; on a dial-up
connection, that's a killer.

Any help or tips would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Jeff,

MS's .DOC format is binary and supports compressed
graphics. RTF is basically a 7bit text format and
the graphics aren't stored in compressed form.

Word also may be saving two copies of the graphic
which you can work around with the registry change
