Saving templates to the templates folder

In previous versions of Word, as soon as you changed the file type to "DOT",
the folder in which it was going to be saved automatically changed to the
Templates folder. In 2007, now you have to remember to specifically click
the Templates folder in the navigation pane or your template is likely to end
up in My Documents and not show up in My Templates.

Why did MS change this? What is the enhanced productivity I'm expected to
gain by having to do this myself?

This reflects that you can save templates anywhere; I agree it's a pain.
Note, however, that if you create a template as a .dotm or .dotx file from
the outset (by choosing Template rather than Document when you create it),
Word will direct you to the Templates directory by default. Otherwise, you
can click on the Trusted Templates shortcut in the Places Bar.

Thanks. I'd rather have the default be to put templates in the templates
folder. If they want to give me the ability to save anywhere else, then I
can change it to anywhere else. I wish their help files would include a
"Here's our thinking on this change ..." section.

It's always been true that you could save templates anywhere; it's only with
Word 2007 that you can identify specific folders as "trusted," I believe,
but I can't see that making much difference except for global
templates/add-ins and the like since templates that are not in the Templates
folder won't be shown in the New dialog, I don't think. I know the rationale
of this change has been explained to me (by Office MVP Beth Melton), but I
don't recall exactly what it was (if there was anything beyond what I've
already said); perhaps Beth will drop by and enlighten us!
