saving to flash drive problems

MZanussi

I opened a Word file on my USB flash drive, made changes, went to save it and
received a message Word cannot save file due to file permission error. I've
never had this problem before and have plenty of space on my USB. I've tried
other files and got same message. I was able to resave the file to my hard
drive and desk top. Thanks.

Hi

Working on a Word document on removable media is a certain path to disaster.
Always use Windows Explorer to *copy* the file from the flash drive on to
your hard drive, work on it there, and when you're finished, use Windows
Explorer to *copy* it back again.

Hope this helps.

Hi Shauna:

Can you explain step by step how to do it? I've tried that and it says
directory path cannot be created. This really has me baffled.

- Open an Exploring window, such as My Computer, or press WinKey + E.
- Make sure you have a Restored window (you should be able to see part
of the Desktop).
- Drag/drop the file from your flash drive the Desktop.
- Double-click to open the file and start Word.

Once you're finished editing and after the file is closed:
- Right-click the file and select Send to\Removable Drive (it should
include the drive letter as well).

Once the copy is complete then just drag the file from the Desktop to
the Recycle bin.

Go into Windows Explorer, or via My Computer. Navigate to the
folder/directory that has the normally saved Word document (on C:).

Select the file but don't open it (usually that's single click, but if like
me you've selected single click for open then it's enough to highlight it
(it will now be in blue/grey).

Select Edit | Copy from the top menu.

Navigate to the destination folder/directory (may be E: or possibly F:)

Select Edit | Paste from the top menu.

The selected file is now copied to the new location.

As the other poster says, always use Word to save to the ordinary C: drive,
and never save from Word to removable media. Make all other copies to that
media under Windows Explorer or My Computer.

I've also been having problems saving my files to a flash drive. I tried the
steps below, and still got the message, directory or file cannot be created.
What I've noticed lately is that ever since a colleague emailed me a batch of
Word files created within a template he pulled off the internet, that when I
try to save, a directory file comes up as the default save place. I
circumvent this by choosing my desktop as my save place. But I can't copy
those files to my flash drive, and now everytime I try to save any kind of
file, all of a sudden the message, directory or file cannot be created. If I
can't save one way or another to my flash drive, that means everything will
have to be put on disk. Why must the software insist on creating a directory
for every save? I'm nervous about losing my work. Is there something that
can be done, other than what's been suggested already, which hasn't worked
for me ?

You should not save documents to any form of removable media. Save to your
local hard disk drive. Then COPY the document to the removable media.

Still does not work. I continue to get error messages and cannot move files
to my flash drive or create new files andstore them on the flash drive. Any
other ideas?

Is this a new Large flash drive (2GB+). Has it ever worked correctly on your
PC? Some of the new faster, larger drives may be incompatible with your
computer. Do you have access to another (smaller) flash drive that you could
borrow to test?

You seem to know what you are doing with this kind of stuff so...
I'm wondering if you know why i can't copy off of the internet and paste
into word(doesn't recognize i have attempted to copy), anywhere on the
internet, not just one web page.

When pasting into Word, click on Edit | Paste Special | Paste as:
Unformatted text | OK.

Going to the original post I recently upgraded, if you can call it that to
Word 2007, that is where my problems start i dont like the idea of being
forced to copy to my hard disk then USB. In Word 2003 i was able to save to
my USB directly will i ever be able to do that again?

You may get away with working with one of the new really fast USB sticks
(like the Corsair Flash Voyager GT), but I still would not advise doing it.
This isn't actually a new phenomenon for Word 2007: many users lost many
documents saving or editing directly on a USB stick with previous version
too and probably hundreds of thousands of documents were corrupted on floppy
disks.

Well I'm using a Sandisk U3 smart drive and like i said i was rather new to
Word 2007 and I liked my old ways. I believe I found a way to save word 2003
in 2007 without permission errors worked well last night Alt + 1 instead of
Ctrl + S. I'll continue with the old ways until I lose something.

You can look a tiny bit further in Word Options and you will find that you
can put Word 2007 into compatibility mode where Word saves in 97-2003 doc
format. (Alt+F, I, S)

Yeah saw that too. Well i will appreciate the help. When i got to school
however I tried my theory that worked at home it failed so don't listen to my
advice. Thanks for replying and i can save 2007 to 2007 directly to flash so
i guess i'll just have to wait for our labs to be moved up to 2007. Thanks
for the helpful tips.
