Scale up EPM Servers

Hi All,

My Company have bought 2 big (8-WAY)servers for the replacement of
existing Project Server(Front End) and SharePoint server. The existing
servers are using in the production environment. How can we repalce the
old servers with new with minimum risk?

As we all know that the project server uses the name of Server in the
database. so basically we want to use the same name of the new server
as we had with old one otherwise we need to change server names in the
production database manually. So again my question whats the best way
to do the desired activity with minimum risk?

Your help would be highly............. appreciated.

Thank you.

(a) Bad idea! Use two new server names. If you name them the same name you
won't be able to keep the current production unit live while you bring up the
new system. Additionally, you won't have a rollback option if you hose your
move (which you will, at least once, because it always happens, really, it
does).

(b) Setup Project Server and SQL on the new servers.

(c) Go on the old SQL server and backup the ProjectServer database.

(d) Copy the backup file to the new SQL server

(e) Restore the database into the new SQL server. Now, if your old database
name "ProjectServer" is the same as the new database name, rename the backup
set to a new name, such as “ProjectServer2â€.

(f) Use editsite. --- (Search on editsite on www.microsoft.com to find
instructions and the program.) Attach the “ProjectServer2†database.

That was the easy part.

(g) Now move the SharePoint Services site. Follow directions on KB 905386.
(Just type in 905386 in the search box on www.microsoft.com.)

That’s it. Just practice a lot! Your production site will be up and
running so there is no downtime until you get it right, then shut production
server down to bring the most current data to the new production site...

Good luck.
