What's a "Scan program"? Is this Windows terminology? Over there, I thought
it meant something like "file system checking". We don't call it "Scan" on
the Mac - usual "Disk Utilities" is the term here. In OS X, you get a simple
version of that every time you reboot. Disk Utility can repair the file
system, up to a certain degree, in its First Aid pane. But it works only on
non-startup disks. To work on your startup disk you have to be booted from
anther disk o your system CD (or DVD). If you know your way around Unix, you
can start up the Mac in "Single User mode" (command-S) and use all the Unix
command line tools available, beginning with fsck -y (you need 'fsck_hfs
-fy' for journaled disks like Panther default startup disk, and cab specify
other disks too.) But you'd better know what you're doing to use those.
There are superior 3rd-party utilities: the best is DiskWarrior, from
Alsoft. Sometimes you'll have a TechTools CD that came with your computer,
it's OK too. I really recommend DiskWarrior.

But I wonder why you might expect such a disk utility to come with iLife, of
all things. iLife has nothing to do with things like file system checking
and repair. So maybe you don't mean that sort of Scan at all - maybe you
mean software for a photo-scanner? Surely not - if you have a scanner it
will have come with its own scanner software (although you can buy superior
OCR software - OmniPage Pro - to work with it.) If you originally bought
your scanner for a PC and don't think the CD came with Mac drivers (although
they usually do) go to the company's website and download the most
up-to-date Mac drivers.

By Scan program, I mean a software program that can be used with a Scanner
as in scanning in pics, documents, etc. Sorry for not being more specific.

That's OK. As I said, that software program should have come with your
scanner machine. Or - what would you use a pure software scanner on aside
from physically scanning pages in a scanner? They're already images. If
there's some reason why you'd want to scan screen images or image files and
save the result as data, I'd bet there's something out there that does this.

GraphicConverter, a great app which now comes with OS 10.3 in /Applications,
may be able to do what you want. I see it even has an Acquire menu item in
File menu that can download pictures from cameras as well as the usual TWAIN
Acquire that works with physical scanners. (I'm using a later pad-for
upgrade version than what comes with Panther.) Take a look at it and see if
that's what you want. (If it's not in /Applications/, look in
Applications/Utilities/.) Also check out Grab and Image Capture. I still
can't work out what you mean by scanning without a scanner but I know
nothing about this area. Someone else might.

Scan from MacYou may want to check out VueScan:
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/7610

If you go to the developer's site, you should be able to look up your scanner in his list of scanners his program will support. If you don't see it, it probably won't work.

Good luck.

Your scanner should have come with a driver program, and several apps
can read from scanners directly, but for my money (it's trial-ware), the
hands-down best Mac scanning program is Ed Hamrick's VueScan:

But give it a try anyway: I'm the person responsible for Hamrick adding the
Microtek SlimScan C6 a couple of weeks ago.

I've never used it before but the Image Capture application comes with
Mac OS X and is used with digital cameras and scanners.
