What's 'scaning' [/sic/]?! This is one of the most fundamental rules of
English grammar: -

If a word ends in a consonant, you double that consonant before adding
'-ing' , '-er' or '-ed' - except where the word has a long 'i' sound - as in
'plain' 'drain' or 'train'. Then you proceed as for words ending in 'e'.
Words ending in 'nd' are also an exception.

If a word ends in a vowel (i.e.'e') you knock off the final 'e' before
adding '-ing', '-er' or '-ed'.

What you have asked is "How do I scane a document" - and there is no such
word!

The scanning of a paper document in order to edit it is called Optical
Character Recognition (OCR) and requires both a scanner (obviously) and
special OCR software. I use ABBYY FineReader (www.abbyy.com) but there are
many other packages out there.
