Scanning a document to use with Word 2007

I'm just not getting it... read some of the posts & still not sure what I
need to do to do what I want to do. I just purchased a Canon scanner. i
need to scan a typed document, and save it as a document in Word- From the
scanning program within the scanner, I can only save as a pdf file, which
won't work for my need, I know I need to do it from Word, but can't figure
out how. I hope this makes sense?
Please tell me, in simple terms, how I go about using my scanner to scan a
document into Word. Or maybe the question is, Once I open Word, how can I
scan into Word so I can save my file as a document file, not as a pdf file?
I have a stack of medical records I MUST scan, and then fax, and really have
to figure this out. If someone can also assist in how to fax them from my pc
I would appreciate that information as well. Thank you so much for your
help.

If you need to be able to edit the document, once scanned, you use the OCR
software supplied with your Cannon scanner.

Or in Word, Insert>Picture>from Scanner - you wont be able to edit the
scanned image.

Assuming you have a landline & a fax capable modem; a fax printer will have
been installed. Basically you 'print' the document to the fax printer

Word 2007 does not support Insert from a scanner. In Office 2007 you need
to use Microsoft Office Document Imaging. Under MODI File or using the scan
icon on the toolbar you can scan the image. Using MODI Tools, your can use
Office OCR to convert to text and also to send the text to Word 2007.
Suggest you check MODI Help for assistance.

Thank you both so very much- Now I get it and able to do what I need to do.
Sure don't understand tho, why MS chose to remove this feature.
