Scanning and using Word

How can I save a scanned file as a document file for editing?

I use MS Office 2003 and can scan with the tools therein, but it only saves
as TIFF and I cannot edit, even though it is a scanned Word document.

I have the Epson Perfection 1650. MS Office 2003 and Windows XP
Professional.

You need to have OCR (Optical Character Recognition) software installed. I'm
surprised it didn't come with the scanner. You will then get the option to
scan to this and then it will send it to Word as a Word document.

It was a couple of years ago, but my 1650 came with OCR on the
installation CD.

I tested it with the OCR which I found on the program. I found it fairly
decent on simple documents, but not perfect by any means.

I downloaded for a Trial BBYYA Scan to Office and it seems fairly good. Have
run only 3 tests though.

But thanks again for your pointing in the right direction.

PS. I never got a Manual with this scanner when I bought it new at Best Buys

Nope - it sure ain't perfect ;) I tried it initially, and found the same
as you have; I didn't pursue it as I've never had a need for the
facility.

IIRC one doesn't get a manual - they expect you to download it from the
Epson site. I did, using up loads of time and paper, but I've learnt far
more by playing with the fairly intuitive program

Good luck!
