Thanks for your reply. The keyboard wedge does seem the best HW solution. I probably should have posted to .modulesetc, and been a bit more specific: I was thinking what with the 2D symbologies available, there may be developers out there designing access apps which would almost do away with screen and keyboard interaction, by encoding instructions into the barcode itself
