Scanning Help Needed

I tried scanning photocopied book pages to my computer using my HP
printer/scanner/copier/fax machine and the HP Director software.

The scan succeeds and I save the file as an uneditable Word document.

The file is too large for emailing. How do I resolve this problem while
retaining *.doc status?

I **really** dislike that darned Director software. If the recipient isn't
supposed to be able to edit the file, why not just scan it in a s a.jpg? As
for the size issue, there's always .pdf files.
