If the HP & its software are Twain-Compatible you should only have to use
Insert> Picture> From Scanner or Camera. That simply launches your scanner
software which takes over from there. The image of the scanned page will be
inserted directly into your Word doc. The process is relatively simple, but
the resulting file is a different story:) First of all, its going to take
you 3 hours (or more) just to do the scanning.

A 150 page document file constructed from 150 page-sized pictures covered
with myriad text boxes is going to be a nightmare to deal with. It will most
likely break when you need it the most - you've heard of Murphy's Law? Long
story short, this is simply not what Word is designed to do. IMHO you'd be
best off to see if an electronic form is available. Otherwise use a
different type of program (such as a Desktop Publishing app) if you can and,
if not, fill the printed form in using a typewriter or even by hand.

You need one more piece of software: an application that can recognise
scanned "pictures" of text and turn it into editable text characters.

It's called "Optical Character Recognition" software.

http://www.macworld.com/article/1483/2002/06/ocr.html

Before spending a lot of money, first read your manual for your scanner and
see whether HP has included an OCR program with their software. They do,
with some models of their printers.

Secondly, I strongly suggest that you see if you can try OCR software out on
someone else's computer, or download a trial version.

OCR is very much an acquired taste. It takes a little skill to get good
results. There is plenty of text out there that will NEVER give good
results (e.g. Newspaper articles typically will never OCR properly). And
often, you will find that "typing" it is quicker than fixing up the mess OCR
makes :)

If OCR does work for you, OmniPage Pro has been the world leader for the
past 20 years. With a price to match :)

Hope this helps

Current system includes: Mac OS 10.5.2, Word (and Office) 2008 for Mac, HP Laserjet 3052 (all in one printer, copier, scanner). I purchased the HP during the summer of 2007 when my Mac OS was 10.4. Scanned perfectly. Then upgraded to OS 10.5. Would not scan. Workaround was to use Word for Mac (had version 2004 at the time), insert, picture, from scanner. Got the job done. Just installed the new Office for Mac. There is no provision for inserting a picture from a scanner. Any thoughts on what can be done? This has not been fun :frown:

Hi Diana -

When did you last check for an update to your printer driver? Functionality
of printers & scanners (separate or all-in-one) is the responsibility of the
mfr's software & the OS. Office 2004 did provide a Twain interface but all
that did was call the device driver. Office 2008 doesn't include Twain
support, I'm afraid, but even if it did I doubt it would help here. I'd
suggest that if a driver isn't available you should contact HP support.

How?

It would reduce Microsoft's profit and increase the price of Office. I
can't see how that would benefit either party?

Once you have scanned into Word, you have a "picture" in your document that
you cannot edit. So how is the user better off?

It is MUCH better for the user to use the software that came with their
scanner. They will then get full control of all the features of their
scanner, plus the ability to convert the result to text. You will not
achieve either of those requirements with a "one size fits all" TWAIN driver
coded by Microsoft to the lowest common denominator scanner out there.

But you WILL get a price rise if they have to put two people on this for a
year :)

Cheers

scanning into word would benefit microsoft & the user
