Scared I might change something

I already viewed the directions for use (tutorial) but, (I know this is
probably a VERY stupid question to anyone who sees it) but, when downloading
a template I like & then changing it as it says we can, (from the community
ones too) how can I be sure I am NOT doing something wrong? or changing
something on the template that would make the author or contributor mad? Is
it possible to do something like that? After downloading one, do I take
certain steps as to NOT mess up the Original template?

The templates are offered for you to change to suit your needs. As long as
you don't sell the template or claim it;s your property, what you do with it
is pretty much your business.

As for doing something wrong, like what?
