schedule help

Hello, I am trying to develop a schedule in Excel that will automaticly
fill out an employee schedule after you fill out there availability and
the total number of payroll hours available. I also need to find a way
to rank the employees so that the hardest workers get preference as far
as hours are concerned. Although I know Excel very well, I am a novice
at writing Macros. I have spent close to a hundred bucks on VBA for
excel books and although I am learning ALOT, I have no idea how to
approach this schedule workbook. Any ideas as to the best way to
approach this?
Thanks in advance,
Kingtriton.

Hi, I don't have an answer, but it seems there are a lot
of questions you need to look at, even to begin. Number
of shifts and their timing, number of employees, an
assined "rank" for each employees, so the best get
the "most" hours? or the "preferred" hours. Is it a
standard 8 hour shift? Is there an hour or 1/2 hour lunch
break. Are the emplyees just "Scheduled" or are they
assined to specific tasks? Is the schedule a weekly
schedule? Even with all of these questions answered, it
looks like a very difficult task. Possibly moving an 8
hour time brock around in a work sheet.

The ranking system would allow me to rank my better employees to get th
most hours that their availablilty would allow. The time of th
scheduled shifts would vary depending on the employees availabilty.
There are three shifts, open, mid and closing. The schedule needs t
be done weekly and specific tasks are assigned in another workbook tha
is filled out daily. I have the ranking system figured out and th
availability. I just need to know how to write a macro that wil
compare availability to the ranking system and then fill out th
schedule using only the number of hours available and still filling
set requirement of filling the number of needed employeesper shif
depending on the day. I know it is extremly complex and for a macr
newbie like myself, its like asking one man to move a mountain. Thi
is the way I learn this stuff though, accept a task to build somthin
like this, research how to do it (ask the experts) and then study WH
there answer works thus learning how to think of my own solutions fo
future projects.
Thanks,
Kingtrito
