Schedule Re-Vamp.

Question:
I'm revamping a 2100 line item schedule which originated from several
projects, i.e. several projects merged into 1, many of the schedules were
duration driven in nature and similar people were on the same project
schedules.

I took the last several days to map out and sequence tasks, get the right
pred/successor relationships as well as proper indentions and identification
of milestones.

I've also removed all the resources from the resource sheet as there were
copies of resources and a lot of ambigous information. I then added
resources from a resource plan we already have in que.

Ultimately, the objective is to see if we have the appropriate resource
balance and that we can meet the dates we have agreed to:

I am taking the following approach
Remove all extraneous tasks that are not needed.
Don’t add resources to 100% complete tasks.-unless we want to see who
completed what? The task is assumed complete.

For those tasks that are not complete.
• Assign Resource
• Define Work in Hours
• Define Duration and size start and end dates accordingly.
• Review Critical Path –see if need to refine. To see if we can meet
delivery dates.
Once all tasks that are not 100% complete are done, base line the schedule
and start tracking to remaining tasks.

I am wondering if there is an easier approach or any additional steps we
need to take in order to make this a viable schedule for trackijng.

Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards,

Hi,

Looks good to me, not much useless work.
Just one thing that makes me wonder:
. Define Duration and size start and end dates accordingly.

If you assign a resoruce AND work to a task, then Project calculates
duration. Then when you have the right predecessor links Project calculates
start and finish dates (and the critical path).
So this line of work looks like useless to me - you use a software to
calculate that for you, or am I missing something?

I am using Fixed Units not Fixed Durations.

However we do have a challenge which needs addressed..

We have tasks that are 5 days in duration but only requires say 8 hours of
work, how do we ensure we keep both the duration and work in line.

Currently under fixed units the date gets adjusted accordingly.

Hi,

You say fixed units, so don't touch, then give in Work... all Project can do
is change duration isn't it?
As long as you have fixed units as a task type, Project will not recalculate
the units which meands that work and duration are linked mathematically.
