Scheduling does not complete

I'm using Project 2007 with CA Clarity. I opened the project in Microsoft
Project and scheduled the project. The tasks where dates changed were
highlighted as expected. However, the dates and work effort for one task
along with the activities and phases it is part of continue to change each
time I hit F9. There were NO updates to the plan in between requests to
schedule yet the dates continue to change. Changes to the task type have no
effect on the behavior.

Check the start and finish date of the task. Does a very small triangle
shows up in the bottom right corner of the field?
If so, this is a paste link and could cause the behaviour you are seeing.
Right click the start/finish field and click 'Clear contents' to recover
from this.

You also might want to check the dependencies in the task.

I hope this helps,
Hans

Thanks for the suggestions; no, there were no links pasted to the date
fields. There is a predecessor task with a F-S dependency; it has not
finished yet the resources on the subject task violated the dependency and
started this task. I don't understand why repeated clicks on the F9 key
results in changes to that task's finish date. It pushes out years at a time
with no other updates.

Hi Tom,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

It could be caused by dependencies attached to Summaries - something one should never do if possible. Insert the Predecessor and Successor columns, filter for Summaries and check it out.

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at this web address: http://project.mvps.org/faqs.htm

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :)

Mike; thanks for trying. No, there are no dependencies attached to the
summary. I think the real problem is the Units value in the Resource
assignments window. Because the units value is 0%, it tries to schedule but
cannot complete. Each successive attempt to schedule results in pushing the
finish date out even more. A bit of history - this project started in
Primavera, was exported as an MPP file, loaded into Clarity and then opened
again from Clarity to Microsoft Project. Primavera does not utilize the
concept of Units or Max Units, it assumes all resoruces are 100%. It does
compute the hours per day required to complete an assignment. I feel the
Units values have been retained and should have been updated in Clarity
before opening the project in MSP.

I've heard of this before, Tom. Project's resource levelling will only delay tasks where the resource is overallocated - nothing more. If there are no resource assignments, levelling can give odd results as you have found. I suspect that the number of conversions from one program to another hasn't helped! I suggest you give your project some meat to work with. Make each resource 1000% (ie 1 resource) and try again.
