schwa

In Word04 you can insert the unicode H0259 character (IPA Extensions
block, Latin small letter schwa) using the system character palette..

Alternatively, you can turn on Unicode Hex Input (check it on first in the
International Prefs) and just insert it by typing Option+0259.

anybody know how to make a schwa (the upside down e thing?)

Open your mouth loosely, relax your jaw and tongue, and vocalise. m.

PS Sorry, couldn't resist.

PPS The SIL folks have a good Mac OS X compatible font with a lot of
phonetic symbols. However, you don't really need this just to enter a
schwa, because Lucida Grande, the default font on Mac OS X, includes it.
If you don't know how to find out that fact, see the second volume of my
ebook on Word 2004, which discusses the use of the Character Palette in
this regard.

That's a cool Mac feature!! Hope the Windows folks will "borrow" the idea (even if turning it on will break ALT accelerator keys).

Actually you can already do this in WinWord: Type the hex value, then press
ALT-X. And it works backwards as well. Select the letter (or have the IP to
the right of it) then press ALT-X to convert to Hex value.

Hi Matt,

Yes, I know about ToggleCharacterCode.

I'd prefer Alt+####, since Alt+X messes up if the previous letter happens to be a number, a-f or A-F.
You can avoid that if you select the hex code first, but still...

Regards,
Klaus
