Scientific vs Floating with General Number Format - Quickie

Hi

Is there a simple rule that Excel uses to determine when it switches from
floating to scientific when it chooses how to display a number that is in a
cell which is number formatted to "General"?

Empirically, it appears that happens when an integer requires more than 11
digits or when a number less than one requires more than 9 digits (11
characters included "0.").
