Screen colors change on word start and end

I have an odd one for the gurus - Microsoft Word 97 on an XP Home SP2
system, with Excel 2003 installed. Open a document that uses Word,
or open MS-Word and the color depth goes to 8bit (256 colors) - then
back when Word closes. I have tried several different video
drivers, removed and re-installed Word97, then tried Word 2000 for a
bit - all the same results. Tried replacing the NORMAL.DOT file just
in case it was the cause. System appears ok otherwise and Excel 2003
works fine with no changes to the video. Dell Dim 3000, built-in
Video 865 intel - and it did it with a separate video card as well.

Any ideas (hopefully constructive) would be appreciated.
