screen now shows symbols for paragraphs spaces etc

all of a sudden when I type a document the screen shows the symbols for
spaces, paragraphs etc. How do I make them go away? Thanks

Help can sometimes be quite useful; try it on "paragraph"! Actually, the
command is Show/hide formatting marks and is a toggle usefully put on a
command bar. You may already have it and have accidentally clicked it.
