screen shots disappeared

My screen shots that have been part of my Word document are all of the sudden
gone. There are just empty boxes where they once were. What has happenned
here? I tried closing and reopening, but there is no sign of them.

If it's Word 2003 or earlier, go to Tools > Options > View and turn off
"Picture placeholders" (and make sure "Drawings" is checked).

If it's Word 2007, go to Office button > Word Options > Advanced > Show
document content and turn off "Show picture placeholders" (and make sure
"Show drawings and text boxes on screen" is checked).
