Screenshots in Word 2000

A book I am writing contains many screenshots - or did. On opening the file
today all screenshots have been replaced with a picture frame containing a
large red cross. The last few pages in the book have been pure text so I
don't know at what point the screenshots changed. My pc did freeze recently
whilst the file was open, but it was recovered and saved. Could that have
been the cause or can my screenshots been retrieved?
Can anyone help please.
