I can go View, Toolbars, Customize, and tick show
screentips and show shortcut keys...works fine UNTIL I
close Word then it disappears. Please help. I've run
detect and repair, no viruses, system restore back 2
weeks (beyond installation of Random House Dictionary).

When you customize your toolbar in a document, the customizations are
stored in the template upon which the document is based. Usually this
template is NORMAL.DOT. When you close Word after making
customizations, do you get a prompt to save changes to your NORMAL.DOT
global template? You should say yes.

I seem to recall a dictionary add-in for Word that reset your toolbar
preferences when Word starts. It could have been Random House so if it
started happening after you installed it then I'd say that is the
problem. The only real test is to disable the add-in and see if your
preferences are saved.

Also, the preferences on the Options tab of the Customize Toolbars
dialog, such as ScreenTips and Show Shortcut Keys are stored in the
Registry rather than Normal.dot. These settings are automatically
saved when you exit Word so you shouldn't encounter a prompt to save
the changes.
