Script Menu Oddity

S

Sam Elowitch

I just added a script to my Entourage Script Menu items and weirdly, the new
script has the .scpt extension while the others do not. Normally this
wouldn't bother me except that in the Finder, I've instructed the file to
hide its extension, and the other scripts don't show the extension when
viewed through the Finder, and neither does this new script.

Why then, does the extension show up in the Entourage Script Menu only for
that one script? It's weird.

Any insights?

The scripts included with Entourage do not include the ".scpt" extension, so
the one you just added is probably the only one in there with a file
extension. When you click the option to "Hide Extension", the extension is
hidden, but it's still there, and the computer still recognizes its
existence. You just don't see it when you browse the folder using the
Finder.

I suspect that Entourage's script menu just takes the filenames of the files
in the Entourage Script Menu Items folder, disregarding whether the
extension is supposed to be shown or not. You could send a feature request,
asking the developers to respect the setting to "Hide Extension" for files
in the Entourage Script Menu Items folder when viewing the folder contents
from the script menu. In Entourage X, go to Help -> Send Feedback on
Entourage. Otherwise, click on this direct link to enter Mac Product

In addition to Steve's reply:

If you open the "Entourage Script Menu Items" folder, Control-click the
script icon and select the "Get Info..." item, you can delete the ".scpt"
extension in the "Name and extension" pane. This way it won't show up
anymore (but it'll still work fine).

No, but did you know you can option-click a script in the menu and open it
for editing? Same for all applications as far as I know-including Finder.

That did the trick. Thanks!
