scroll wheel begins to scroll document horizontally...

In Word, occaisionally my Intellipoint mouse wheel will begin to scroll the
document horizontally rather than vertically and the only way I've found out
of this problem is to restart the document. I'm not seeing any kb docs so
is this some sort of 'feature' I'm turning on accidentally or is there a fix
for this?

Check the Intellipoint documentation ... some of these mouses have more
bells and whistles than a steam organ. Yes it's a feature that you're
turning on ... try clicking the *wheel* and/or the thumb button.

To add to Jezebel's answer: this is a feature of some of the newer scroll
mice. Check your Intellipoint setup that you definitely have the correct
mouse installed.
